Dwight Andrus Insurance was founded in 1945 by Dwight Andrus Sr. Throughout the company's more than six decades of service, Andrus Insurance has grown to become one of the largest independent insurance agencies in Louisiana.
Dwight Andrus Sr. gained his experience in the field of insurance by working at The Parkeson Insurance Agency. It was this experience that encouraged him to branch out and go into business for himself. Andrus also was responsible for many sizable residential developments during this time. The real estate ventures Andrus pursued helped shape Lafayette's growth and, as a result, he sought assistance from his brother Roger to manage The Insurance Company.
In 1960, the agency relocated to Bendel Road, where it remained in operation for 20 years. During that time, Andrus' grandson, Dwight Andrus III, began to learn about the family business. While attending the University of Southwestern Louisiana, he worked part-time at the agency. He later relocated to Nashville, Tenn., and was employed with Reliance Insurance Group.
Dwight's decision to return to the family business came in the 1980s when Louisiana's oil crash resulted in a severe recession. He was charged with managing the agency during this pivotal turning point, which found the company beginning to excel during the difficult economic time. Much of that growth was fueled by the oil and gas industry, which could not operate without adequate coverage. Andrus put itself in a position to cater to the special risk needs of the oil and gas industry. In 1985, David Andrus joined his brother and was responsible for many functions, including co-manager, commercial insurance sales and serving as IT manager for Andrus Insurance.
The agency has extensive expertise in writing all forms of commercial insurance. Examples of these coverages include Commercial Liability, Commercial Property, Inland Marine, Worker's Compensation, Maritime, Commercial Automobile, Umbrella Policies and International Policies.
In 1993, James Mallia began his leadership with the Employee Benefits Division. His experience with self-funded and fully insured products was instrumental in the growth of this division. Andrus also has divisions that specialize in bonds, personal lines and select accounts.
As the fourth generation enters the family business, they are prepared to bring the same energy and enthusiasm to meet today's changing economic and environmental challenges. The Andrus' are anticipating the additional future generations to their company as well. With this in mind, the firm plans to remain an independent agency and continue to grow as it has during for the past six decades.
In January 2007, Dwight Andrus moved its offices to 500 Dover Boulevard in Lafayette to accommodate for company growth and to better serve its customers. The agency has more than 90 employees, including those who work from three satellite agencies in cities surrounding Lafayette Parish.
